fall/winter essentials

Every fall/winter, I seem to be drawn to my tried and true favourites. Don’t get me wrong, I love summer just as much as the next person. It often results in several weeks of walking in and out of Bath & Body Works to smell their fall candles and walking out empty handed until I finally decide to cave. Only then do I start to openly embrace the return of cooler temperatures! Here are a few of my necessities:

{ pinky-nude nail polish }

{ vampy lips – left to right: plum bright, prince noir, runaway red, media}

{ because having chapped lips & dry skin is the WORST }

{ chunky statement necklaces }

{ “fall” scented candles – leaves & cranberry woods – mMmm }

Zara Miracles

Zara has this thing where they’ve trained their customers not to hesitate when they see something they like… BUY NOW OR FOREVER REGRET! You tell yourself, “if it’s still there when I come back, then it’s meant to be.”

I tried a pair of crochet shorts at Zara when I was visiting Austin and decided that I HAD TO HAVE THEM. Assuring myself that they could be procured in Edmonton, I decided against the purchase. But then I called every Zara in the city (and Calgary), you guys! None. In. Stock. Even tried shipping them to a U.S. address, but GEEZ Zara, you really make it hard for us Canadians to buy your goods! DON’T YOU WANT OUR MONEY? (FYI, you can’t ship to a U.S. address if your billing address isn’t in the U.S. ugh, rude) Sadly, I surrendered. Defeat: ACCEPTED.

Anyway, was perusing through Zara the other day and my friend spotted the elusive crochet shorts. I let out an audible gasp, grabbed a pair, and danced around the store to celebrate my Zara Miracle.

I also got some fun nail polish, cuz I need more nail polish like I need holes in my head.

peachy mint

2 of my favourite colour trends this spring are peach and mint (Ellie Saab’s Spring Couture 2012 line was filled with peaches and mints!) While I’m averse to incorporating pastels into my  wardrobe for fear that it will look too much like a bag of Cadbury Mini-Eggs, I’ll most certainly be wearing some of these colours on my nails.

For some reason, I couldn’t find Essie’s Tart Deco ANYWHERE in Edmonton and so began a 2 year rampage to find a dupe for it (with no success), which means that I’ve accumulated quite the collection of pastel orange-corals. Only recently did I happen to stumble upon Tart Deco (at Shoppers Drug Mart) and of course I let out an audible gasp… and maybe did a little happy dance in the middle of the cosmetics aisle :$

{ “peaches” }

Top to bottom, left to right:
Joe Fresh “Tomato” *favourite
OPI “A Good Man-darin is Hard to Find” *favourite
Revlon “Make Mine Mango”
Essie “California Coral”
Joe Fresh “Coral”
Essie “Tart Deco”
Revlon “Peachy”
Sally Hansen “Snappy Sorbet”

{ “mints” }

Top to bottom, left to right:
Revlon “Jaded” (the only true mint colour in this set)
Essie “Turquoise & Caicos” (robins egg blue)
Revlon “Whimsical” (not mint-coloured at all, haha! Just thought I’d throw that in there cuz it’s in the light blue/green pastel family and yes, it’s a dupe for Deborah Lippman’s “Glitter in the Air”)

What colours are you excited to wear this spring?

September Favourites

It’s been a while since my last favourites post, but honestly I didn’t really have any favourites during the last few months of summer aside from bare legs, sunshine, & hiking in the mountains. Even though I’m devastated that it won’t be summer again for another 7+ months, I’m excited to finally embrace the burgundy wine colours (favourite colour family!) and slip into some cozy fall knits. Below are a few of my favourites from the end of September/mostly beginning of October.

1. “Darkly My Dear” blush was from MAC’s Fall 2010 Villainous Villains collection. It’s a matte dirty brown plum – a welcome change from summer’s bright peachy-pink cheek colours.

2. Pseudo cashmere blend sweaters have become my default work attire when I sleep in and need to throw on a quick outfit in the mornings.

3. Painting my nails black to match the colour of my heart…. jk. My favourite nail polishes of all time are my matte/creme dark vampy reds, but it always feels inappropriate to wear these dark colours during the summer. Left to right: Lady Like, Licorice, and Wicked.

4. “Plum Bright” from MAC’s Fall Colour/Cindy Sherman collection is surprisingly sheer despite it’s appearance in the tube and therefore isn’t as scary for everyday use.

5. “Dark Diversion” is a fluidline that I’ve been long wishing for. I pretty much called every MAC store in my city to hunt this one down (it was sold out in all the stores save for the one that miraculously had 2 left in stock). Anyway, the description says it’s a darkened plum and the product is so smooth and pigmented. It’s fall colour perfection!

6. D&G L’Imperatrice (The Empress) is my new favourite fragrance aside from my go-to, D&G Light Blue. Unlike Light Blue (when you wear it, everyone around you smells it), L’Imperatrice is a mellower “come hither” scent. Ugh, it just smells so good. PS – Why is it that every womens fragrance either smells like you’ve bathed in cotton candy OR smells so strongly of musk?! Not a fan.

7. Adele – Someone Like You

Less is more. I like how the simplicity of this video doesn’t distract from the raw emotion of the song, yet the cinematography captures it so perfectly! The juxtaposition of walking along the Seine river while being miserable and lonely in Paris, the most romantic city in the world, is exquisitely ironic! I sound like such a weirdo saying words like, “cinematography” and “juxtapose” hahahah I promise you I’m not pretentious like that! But the beauty of the video commands that I use sophisticated words to describe it. I get goosebumps whenever I hear this song and the video makes me love it even more!!!

8. FALL TV SHOWS! Current roster: HIMYM, Glee, Modern Family, Community, New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, Whitney, and Revenge. AND DEXTER’S BACK!!! (Did I forget anything?)

MMmmmkay that’s all for now. To my Canadian readers, hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving and ate lots of turkey and pumpkin pie :)
